William Leroy “Babe” Brinkley Jr. was born on May 23, 1923, in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. He was the son of William L. Brinkley and Louise C. Schomburg Brinkley.

Brinkley was assigned to #3 Commando, 3rd Troop, during World War II. He was transferred to Company E, 1st Ranger Battalion, and promoted to Staff Sergeant. SSgt Brinkley was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He died from his wounds received in battle on November 19, 1943, in Venafro, Italy. He is now buried in Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, USA.
