William R. Brady was born on February 21, 1919, in Brooten, Minnesota. He was the husband of Sarah J. Brady. Brady served in the 1st Ranger Battalion as a Corporal during World War II. He landed at Dieppe and was in active combat with the enemy. He is considered the first American to fire a shot in Nazi-occupied Europe. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. After Dieppe, Brady remained with Company C, 1st Ranger Battalion. He was admitted to the hospital in December 1943 for a facial injury. Cpl Brady went on to join the Air Force and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a past President of the WWII Ranger Battalions Association. LtCol Brady died on December 13, 1989, and is now buried in Tyler Memorial Park and Cemetery, Tyler, Smith County, Texas, USA.
