Merritt Michael Bertholf was born on October 9, 1914, in Ohio. He was the son of Vane Vandelier Bertholf. Bertholf served in the 1st Ranger Battalion as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was promoted to First Sergeant and transferred to Company D, 3rd Ranger Battalion. 1Sgt Bertholf was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He was Wounded in Action in August 1943. He was dropped from the Ranger Rolls several days later. 1Sgt Bertholf died on October 19, 1996, and is now buried in Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, USA.
