Clare P. Beitel was born on September 8, 1920, in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. He was the husband of Verda Lucille Hayes Beitel.

Beitel served in Company E, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II.PFC Beitel was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He was admitted into the hospital in Arzew and later dropped from the rolls. He was sent home and he was discharged in July of 1943. PFC Beitel died on February 5, 1979, and is now buried in Friendship Cemetery, Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas, USA.
