Jacob I. Piatt Jr. was born in 1919, in West Liberty, Ohio. He was the son of Jacob I. Piatt and Mina Pearl Shanley Piatt. He was the husband of Margaret J. Smith. He served in the 10th Tactical Recon Group, 12th Tactical Recon Squadron, 9th Air Force, as a Lieutenant during World War II.
On July 21, 1944, his P-51 Mustang #42-103397 took off from Station 465 Chalgrove, Sussex, England, for a mission Aircraft delivery to the A-9D Le Molay airfield (14). At around 16h30, his plane hits a hedge and bursts into flames while attempting a landing with the gear retracted, following a probable mechanical failure near La Sarderie farm in Tamerville. Lt Piatt was instantly killed. He is now buried in the North Lawn Cemetery, Canton, Stark County, Ohio, USA.
