William Arden Stephens was born on January 25, 1923, in Clio, Barbour County, Alabama. He was the son of James Porter Stephens and Mina Murdock Stephens.

William served in Company I, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 8, 1944, while advancing toward a German machinegun position on the road to Grainville, France. Pvt Stephens is now buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery Louisville, Barbour County, Alabama, USA, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
