Roy Kyle Holbert Sr. was born on February 11, 1921, in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. He was the son of Roy Mckinley Holbert and Annie Mae Peek Holbert.

He served in the 369th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Flight Engineer/Top Turret gunner of the B17G " Susan Ruth" #42-31499 during World War II. On a mission to Frankfurt, Holbert's plane was attacked and shot down by two Luftwaffe Focke-Wulf 190 fighters and crashed near Macquenoise, Belgium on February 8, 1944. He was taken as a POW and was sent to Stalag Luft VI located near the town of Heydekrug, Memelland then forced to march to Stalag Luft IV Gross-Tychow, Pomerania, Prussia. He flew on Howard Snyder's crew. SSgt. Holbert died on January 30, 2010, and is now buried in the Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, USA. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
