Richard LeRoy Daniels was born on April 1, 1920, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He was the husband of Virginia H. Ford Daniels. He enlisted in the service on October 3, 1941.

He served in the 369th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and bombardier of B-17G "Susan Ruth" #42-31499 during World War II. On a mission to Frankfurt, Daniels's plane was attacked and shot down by two Luftwaffe Focke-Wulf 190 fighters and crashed near Macquenoise, Belgium on February 8, 1944. He was taken as a POW after having landed in a parachute in the vicinity of Macquenoise, and transported to a Luftwaffe hospital in Brussels, Belgium. 2Lt Daniels was on board the Swedish Hospital ship "Gripsholm" (together with fellow crew member Joseph Musial and 78 Canadian servicemen and about 700 civilians, most of American nationality), arriving in New York harbor on February 21, 1945. He was honorably discharged on August 1, 1947. He died on September 30, 1983, and is now buried in the Resurrection Cemetery, Montebello, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
