George Thomas Hartman was born on March 3, 1916, in Santiago, Provincia de Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan, Chile. He was the son of George J. Hartman andMargaret E. Hartman.
George served in the 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, as a First Lieutenant and pilot of the P-47 # 42-8538 during World War II. On January 5, 1944, 1Lt Hartman took off from Station 357 in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, England, on a mission to escort bombers from La Rochelle to Bordeaux, France. Shot down by an Fw190 fighter at 10:15 am, his plane exploded and burned upon hitting the ground at La Bouteillière in the commune of St-Georges-de-Reintembault. 1Lt Hartman was buried at Saint Philip and Saint James Cemetery, Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey, USA, and was awarded the Air Medal.
