Robert Bruce Rands was born on May 7, 1925, in Saint Clair, St. Clair County, Michigan. He was the son of William J. Rands.
He served in the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, as a Private during World War II. He was a member of an armored car M-8 crew. He was in the turret, acting as the gunner, when their Armored Car was destroyed by a German antitank gun in the hamlet of Les Rolandières, in the town of Dol-de-Bretagne, Brittany, France. The death date inscribed on his headstone was August 4 but Rands was killed in action on August 3, 1944, during the liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne. He was buried at Hillside Cemetery, Saint Clair, St. Clair County, Michigan, USA.
