Spencer F. Baum was born in 1923, in New York. He was the son of Paul James Baum Sr. and Lelia E. Baum.
He enlisted in the Army on December 22, 1941. He was employed as a Machinist before entering the service. He served in the 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 3, 1944, during the liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was buried at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
