Santo Dionisio Nunziato was born on November 1, 1918, in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He served in the 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division as a Technician in Fifth Grade during the World War II.
During the capture of Huelgoat and the flanking maneuver, a tank was hit by Panzerfaust fire at very close range and was set on fire. However, the tank crew stayed inside and continued to strafe the Germans until the heat became unbearable. Crawling out of the vehicle, they found themselves surrounded by Wehrmacht troops who called on them to surrender. Unanimously, they refused and immediately opened fire on the group in the face of overwhelming odds and almost certain death. He was Killed in Action on August 5, 1944, during the liberation of Heulgoat .
