Fred King Blaylock was born on January 14, 1916, in Beulaville, Duplin County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Henry Blalock and Nellie Elizabeth Bostic Blalock.
He served in Company A, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division as a Technician Fifth Grade during World War II. The rank inscribed on his headstone is Private First Class as well as his death date is August 6, 1944. The battle took place on August 5, 1944, as the lead tanks of the 6th Armoured Division rolled through the wooded countryside to Heulgoat, a village of 2,000 people. The tanks ran into minefields, stalled, and came under German rocket and artillery attacks. Eight men were killed, mostly by machine guns and sniper fire as they fled their disabled tanks. He died from his wounds received in battle on August 5, 1944, during the liberation of Heulgoat
