Ray Edward Sheppard was born on October 5, 1920. He was the son of Robert Sheppard Sr. and Darcian [Hebert] Sheppard.
He assigned to the 710th Bomber Squadron, 447th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a top turret gunner of B-17 42-31431 (aka Solid Sender) during World War II. Shot down by flak and crashed while enroute to the target in Regensburg on February 25, 1944. He was taken as a POW in Barth, Germany.
