DeWayne William Pohl was born on September 4, 1922, in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. He was the husband of Ruth Marie Youll Pohl.

Pohl was assigned to the 710th Bomber Squadron, 447th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a navigator of B-17 42-31431 (aka Solid Sender) during World War II. Shot down by flak and crashed while enroute to the target in Regensburg on February 25, 1944. He was taken as a Prisoner of War in Barth, Germany. He remained in USAF serving in Korea and Vietnam, rising to Lieutenant Colonel.
