1st Lt Anna M. Fisher (Charleston, West Virginia, born 1922), an exceptional woman who gave her life for her country. During WWII, Anna joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC), and was sent to North Africa. She was stationed there with her brother, Steve Fisher. A few months later, Anna was in Italy, where she served, as a cryptographer, with the 15th Air Force Headquarters. Thousands of miles away from Charleston, Anna missed her hometown....and her mom. She was proud to serve her beloved country, and make a difference, but she sometimes felt sad about her mother being alone in Charleston. Anna had so many plans and dreams. In February 1945, she wrote to her mother and said: "after the war, I shall attend the University of Wisconsin, study journalism, and get a degree." She also wanted to dance and attend social events. None of her dreams ever came true. On April 20, 1945, Anna was killed in a plane crash in northern Italy. She was only 23 years old. ~ One of twenty Army personnel killed when B-17G Flying Fortress #44-6441 "Mary Rose" struck a mountain, five miles northeast of Caserta, Italy.
