2LT Howren, born August 23, 1917 in New Castle, Indiania; Womens' Army Nurse Corp, Service # N-787004, was a flight nurse on an USAAF 807th MAES evacuation flight of wounded soldiers leaving Catania, Sicily for Algiers, North Africa. About an hour after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into a hill near Caltagirone, Sicily, killing the crew of 6, a medic, flight nurse (Howren), and 16 US Army evacuees/patients.
She had previously worked as a nurse at the Chrysler Corporation; she joined the Army and trained at the School of Air Evacuation, Bowman Field, Louisville KY.
She was survived by her father and stepmother, Fred Lowry Howren and Ella Marie Wallace Howren; sisters Janice Louise Souder Pitts and Jean Ann Veach; and brothers Thomas F, James Edward, and John Richard. She was predeceased by her mother, Pauline Clements Howren, and grandfather, Thomas I Howren, as well as grandmothers Eliza Howren and Mary Ann Howren.
