Howard William Traver was born on September 21, 1921, in Queens, Queens County, New York. He was the son of Walter C. and Bertha J. (nee Curtis) Traver, of Inwood, Long Island, New York.

Howard served in the 218 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. On February 3, 1943, his crew in the Stirling aircraft #BF 406 took off on operations and were not heard from again. They were shot down by a night fighter and crashed at 20h41 near Deelen Airfield (Gelderland) 9 km NNW of Arnhem, where all are buried in Moscowa General Cemetery.
