James Morton Stevenson was born on August 11, 1923. He was the son of James Morton Stevenson and Matilda Stevenson of Parkchester, New York City.

Pilot Officer Stevenson served in the 9 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 7, 1944, when his Avro Lancaster ME579 with six aircrew members on board, returning from operations over Target-Argentan, Orne, France, was descending through the heavy cloud when it crashed, hitting the high ground at Belvoir Castle near Bottlesford in Leicestershire.
The six airmen who perished in this accident were-
RAFVR Sergeant Norman Marshall HANNAH,
RAFVR Sergeant Frank Norman HARDER,
RCAF Sergeant William Frederick SMITH,
RCAF Pilot Officer James Morton STEVENSON,
RAFVR Sergeant Rubin Iain HOOD, and
RAFVR Pilot Officer Clifford Roy KING.
