Gerald Alfred Smith was born on March 10, 1923, in Hamilton, Hamilton Municipality, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Alfred Harry and Julia Anna Garlow of Rochester, N.Y.
Gerald served in the 428 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on February 20, 1944, when his Halifax JD271, which took off from RAF Middleton St.George at 23h56, was homeward-bound and was shot down by night fighter pilot Leutnant Friedrich Potthast of the 12./NJG 1 (based at the Leeuwarden and Bergen airfields) flying a Bf 110 G-4.
