Hugh Weir Morton was born on December 19, 1900, in Belfast, County Down, Northern Ireland. He was the son of Hugh Weir Morton and Elizabeth Morton, of Bakersfield, California, U.S.A.; husband of Harriett Morton, of Toronto.

Hugh served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant during World War II. He died at Christie Street Hospital of natural causes, attributable to service. According to another source, he was medically discharged on 17 September 1943 and died of leukemia.
