Wallace N. Mitchell was born on April 15, 1920, in Salem Corners, Olmsted County, Minnesota. He was the son of John William "Bill" Mitchell and Lena Lybeck Mitchell.

Wallace served in the 103 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on May 20, 1942, when his Wellington aircraft #Z 1141, which took at 22h48 from RAF Elsham Wold, England, on a mission to attack the Saint-Nazaire submarine base in France, was hit by flak and crashed in flames. The aircraft crashed in Saint-Nazaire.
