A native of Diamond Springs, California, George Mitchell entered the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was assigned as an air gunner. In November of 1941, Mitchell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for shooting down an enemy aircraft. He was killed in action in April of 1942 while assigned to the 75th Squadron at the rank of Flying Officer. On April 6, 1942, his Wellington aircraft #X 3489 was shot down at South Cologne, Germany, during operations over enemy territory.
