Warren Bretall Mayes was born on March 24, 1921, in Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Arthur H. and Vera H. Mayes, of Maywood, Illinois.
Warren served in the 419 squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a flying Officer during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 29, 1943, when his Halifax JD215 was shot down by night fighter pilot Major Günther Radusch of the Stab II./NJG 3 (detached to Stab I./NJG 1), flying a Bf 110 G-4 from Venlo airfield. His aircraft crashed near Waalre, Noord-Brabant, Holland (The Netherlands).
