Matthew Mank was born on March 31, 1922, in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York. He was the son of David and Lillian Mank, of Miami, Florida.
Matthew served in the 7 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. On April 14, 1943, aboard Short Stirling III (BK709 MG-P) aircraft, with seven men on board, his crew took flight during the evening from RAF base at Oakington in Cambridgeshire. Their Stirling was one of 462 aircraft (Wellingtons, Lancasters. Halifaxes, and Stirlings) that participated in a night operation over Stuttgart, Germany. BK709 went missing, presumably shot down by enemy fire at Biblis, 9km northeast of Worms.
