Alexander Neil “Sandy” MacLellan was born on 17 August 1914, in Inverness, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Ronald A. MacLellan and Mary Isabella MacLellan, of New York City.

Alexander served in the #23 Operational Training Unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. On the evening of 11th April 1943 Wellington (#BJ786) aircraft and its six-man aircrew took off from Stratford airfield near Worcester to begin a night-navigation training exercise; the practice flight would include navigating to various towns in England, then using the towns as turning points before returning to base. However, in the early morning of 12 Apr, the Wellington made a sudden steep dive, crashing in Fountains Park, near Sawley in North Yorkshire; the aircraft exploded upon impact and all six airmen perished.
