Emmett Jay Longstaff was born on March 31, 1917, in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He was the son of Joseph and Mary B. Longstaff, of Denver, Colorado.

Emmett served in the #218 Gold Coast Squadron as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on April 17, 1943, when his Stirling III BF514 aircraft, which took off at 22h00 from RAF Downham Market, England, on a mission to Mannheim, Germany, was shot down by a night fighter (Major Kurt Holler Stab III./NJG4). The aircraft crashed near the Cogneux farm in the commune of Raucourt-et-Flaba, France.
