Arthur Jennings Alexander was born on August 30, 1925, in Poplar Springs, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was the son of Arthur Frank Alexander and Rosa Belle Griffith Alexander.
Arthur served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. On July 21, 1944, he was with the 21st Marines as they invaded Guam to retake the island from the Japanese. On July 22, Alexander received extensive wounds to his thighs, legs, and arms when a mortar shell fell into his foxhole, which soon caused his death.
