James Rivers Adams was born on July 12, 1910, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to William Duval Adams Jr. and Martha Rivers “Monee” Adams. He married Jean Dunne Watson Klinck and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1931. Before military service, he built a career with Westvaco, rising through positions in California and New Jersey before becoming Sales Manager in New York by 1941. Commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, he served as a Captain in HQ Company, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. Known for his determination, he volunteered to land in the first assault wave on Guam, though not required.
He was killed in action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle of Guam. While assisting a wounded officer on the beach at Agat, he was struck by enemy fire, only a year after receiving his commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is now laid to rest in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.
