Donald Woodrow Johnson was born on December 30, 1917, in Flandreau, Moody County, South Dakota. He was the son of Oscar and Gertrude Johnson of Flandreua.

Donald served in the 432 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant during World War II. On July 26, 1944, aboard the Halifax VII NP688, his crew took off at 21h08 from RAF East Moor on a mission to Stuttgart, Germany. Shot down by flak, their plane crashed at 03h15 at Bois du Roy - Commune of Thorey-en-Plaine, 13 km southeast of Dijon in France. Only one member survived the crash. Pilot Officer Martin was killed in this incident.
