John served in the 156 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on July 29, 1942, when his Wellington III BJ840, which took off at 23h01 from RAF Alconbury, England, crashed in the North Sea, failing to return from an operational flight over Hamburg, Germany.
