William Caldwell Hamilton was born on December 18, 1909, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of William George Hamilton and Mary Etta Caldwell Hamilton. He was the husband of Marjorie McBride Hamilton-Riedell.

William enlisted in the U.S. military on March 11, 1930, in Troop E, 101st Cavalry Regiment (Squadron A), New York City. He attended the U.S. Cavalry School at Fort Riley, KS., and was discharged from the unit on March 11, 1933.

On March 14, 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, becoming a Flying Officer. He served in the 57 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. A crew member on the Lancaster I W4251, which took off at 12h33 on October 24, 1942, from RAF Scampton, England, Flying Officer Hamilton was Killed in Action when his aircraft failed to return from an operational flight over Milan, Italy, and was presumed lost over the sea.
