Wilbert Arnold Gunning was born on December 1, 1911, in Vinemount, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of William John and Ella Irene Gunning, of Painsville, Ohio.
Wilbert served in the #427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was killed on April 22, 1945, when he was thrown from a motorcycle on the Great North Road near RAF Leeming, England.
