Ralph Ernest Gorman was born on November 10, 1917, in Williamsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ernest B. Gorman and Anna May Gorsuch Gorman.
A college student, he enlisted in the RCAF on February 6, 1941, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Serving in the 75 (Royal New Zealand Air Force) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was declared Missing in Action on September 10, 1942, when his Vickers Wellington III (#BJ968) aircraft failed to return following an air operation against targets at Dusseldorf in Germany.
