William Albert Gillen was born on February 23, 1917, in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Mary A. Gillen, of Rumford, Rhode Island.

William served in #57 Squadron (Corpus Non Animo Muto) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. On January 9, 1943, his crew took off at 17h22 from RAF Scampton aboard Lancaster I #ED 319. Shot down by a night fighter, their aircraft crashed at Haarzuilens (Utrecht), 12 km northwest of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Flight Sergeant Gillen was killed in this incident.
