Joseph Patrick Gallagher, of Yonkers, New York, was born on July 7, 1912, in Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Patrick J. and Elizabeth J. Gallagher.

Joseph served in the #138 Squadron (For Freedom) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was declared missing on June 1, 1944, when his Halifax aircraft #LL 409 failed to return from night operations, dropping supplies and agents. His body was never recovered.
