Clarence Clyde Flewelling was born on April 13, 1921, in Saint Martins, Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the son of Harold Stanley Flewelling and Annie Irene Osborne Flewelling, of Allston, Massachusetts.

Clarence served in the 619 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. He was a crew member on the Lancaster aircraft #LL 979 that was shot down twenty-two miles northeast of Aachen at Rolshaven during night operations against Wesseling, Germany. Pilot Officer Flewelling is now buried in the Rheinberg War Cemetery in Germany. He also has a cenotaph in the Mosher Hill Cemetery, New Brunswick, Canada.
