Lawrence (or Laurence) Maurice Clark was born on May 8, 1919, in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was the son of Albert Broily and Jessie Lee (née Bowman) Clark of Hollywood.
Working in the theatre business and residing on Mansfield Street in Hollywood, California, Lawrence enlisted in the RCAF on September 18, 1941, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He served in the 166 RAF Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II.
On April 29, 1943, his crew aboard Vickers Wellington (#HZ278) bomber aircraft took off from RAF Kirmington for a major night mine-laying operation. The Wellington, shot down by flak, crashed into Esbjerg harbor in Denmark; four airmen lost their lives, and one was captured, and taken as POW.
The four airmen who perished in the attack and crash were:
RCAF Flying Officer Lawrence Maurice CLARK
RCAF Pilot Officer John Anthony DALTON,
RCAF Flight Sergeant David Edward GILES and
RCAF Flight Sergeant Hugh Archibald MACEACHEN.
