Robert Joseph Cavanaugh was born on October 29, 1920, in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, USA. He was the son of Harry Raymond Cavanaugh Carey and Catherine Irene Kiley Cavanaugh.

Robert served in the 405 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Sergeant during World War II. He was killed on November 17, 1942, when his Halifax aircraft went into a spin and crashed at Wicken Bonhunt, two and a half miles west of Newport, Essex, England. The crash was caused when the mid-upper gunner fired his guns and hit the inner engine even though the guns were not supposed to be able to depress that far.
