Sterling Lorne Braaten, of Washington, D. C., was born on October 24, 1921, in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the son of Sam Braaten and Laura Romfo Braaten. He was the husband of Shirley Irene Slavens Murray.

Sterling served in the #20 Operational Training Unit (Train To Triumph) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was killed on August 23, 1944, in the crash of his aircraft. The crew of Wellington aircraft # HE 415 was engaged on a thirty-mile cross-country night training flight when they crashed in the sea off Lossiemouth, Scotland.
