Audrey Allen Ayres was born on 26 April 1919 in Eagle, Ada County, Idaho, USA. He was the son of Charles R. Ayres and Mabel Edith Coonrad Ayres.

Audrey enlisted in the US Navy on 14 June 1937 in Salt Lake City and served a 4-year hitch aboard the USS Idaho (BB-42). After his discharge in June 1941, before the US was in WW2, Audrey enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

Audrey served as a Flying Officer in the 429 Squadron as an air gunner aboard a Halifax bomber, which was shot down near Berlin on 20 January 1944. He was initially interred near the town of Zeetze in Germany before his remains were repatriated to the US in 1949. He is now buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin, Germany. He also has memorials in the Old Holy Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery in Middleton, Canada, and Star Cemetery in Idaho, USA.

His name is commemorated on a commemorative panel located at the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Canada, but his surname is spelled as Ayers.
