Doyle Cash McCutchen was born on September 7, 1921. He was the son of Alexander Josh McCutcheon and Ona Bell Cash McCutcheon and was married to Lola Chamberlain Whittaker.
He enlisted in the service on November 4, 1942, in Los Angeles, California. At the time he was living in Los Angeles County, had completed one year of college, was married, and worked in a machine shop in his civil life.
Doyle served in the 535th Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner on the B-17 #42-31097 'Mission Belle' during World War II. He was Killed in Action on December 1, 1943, on their mission over Leverkusen, Germany, when their aircraft was hit by flak and attacked by enemy fighters. The airplane was severely damaged, so the crew decided to ditch the airplane in the River Lek between Streefkerk and Nieuw-Lekkerland, Netherlands. During the enemy attack, one member (Sgt McCutchen) was Killed in Action while two other members drowned in the river. The surviving members were taken as POWs. Sgt McCutchen is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
