Edward Lewis Sowa was born on August 7, 1916, in Passaic, Passaic County, New Jersey. He had one year of high school, had a civil occupation noted as Managers and Officials, and was single without dependents upon enlistment. He was employed by Social Welfare, State School before his enlistment.

Edward entered military service at Camp Upton, Yaphank, New York. He served in Company A, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a First Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 27, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. 1Sgt Sowa is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
