Harold Edward Lester was born on January 30, 1920, in Switzerland County, Indiana. He was the son of Harvey Lester and Mamie Branham Lester.

Harold had a grammar school education, single without dependents, and was employed by Jack Ward, before his enlistment. He entered service at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, on March 6, 1942. Harold served in Company D, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 24, during the American assault on Omaha beach in France. PFC Lester is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
