Clinton Arthur Bush was born on January 27, 1920, in Sylvan Grove, Lincoln County, Kansas. He was the son of Eugene Lester Bush and Elizabeth Borman Bush. He was the husband of Evelyn Williams Killingsworth Bush. He graduated from Wilson High School, Wilson, KS, in 1938 and entered the military the same year.

Clinton served in the 366th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on the B-17 #42-3195 during World War II. He survived an air crash on October 14, 1943, when his airplane was shot down by a German fighter plane Ofw. Heckmann 1./JG1 and crashed at Waldenrath, Germany. He was captured by the Germans and spent 19 months as a POW.
