William John Andrew “Bill” McLachlan was born on October 15, 1921, in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. He was the son of Hugh Marr McLachlan and Eva Blanche Ingram McLachlan.
William graduated from Vernon High School with his matriculation. His family moved to Vernon, British Columbia, while he was still young, which was where he was living when he enlisted in the RCAF in Vancouver on October 25, 1940. At the time of his death, he was serving in the 175 Squadron.
On 29 June 1942, Flight Sergeant McLachlan and one other aircraft from 175 Squadron took off to attack German shipping off Cherbourg. The attack was conducted amid heavy anti-aircraft fire and on reforming, F/S McLachlan’s aircraft was missing. It was presumed that they had been shot down while attacking an enemy convoy.
