Leonard William O'Hara was born on August 2, 1918, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He was the son of Leonard Francis O'Hara and Catherine Agnes Friel O'Hara.
Leonard served in the 15 Squadron of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Pilot of the Stirling I #BF-353 during World War II. He was killed in an air crash on September 16, 1942. Because no bombs were found at the crash site of this aircraft, it was assumed that it was on the return from Essen, but could also have dropped its bombs before the crash. The aircraft landed in Lake IJsselmeer 14 km northwest of Harderwijk, The Netherlands. Today, this is just south of Lelystad Airport. Four crew recovered from the water in 1942.
