Cleron James Carpenter was born June 5, 1918 in Crookston the son of Harry and Mabel Remington Carpenter. A graduate of the University of North Dakota, he aslo studied at the University of Minnesota and was a member of the University Band. He was an Army officer during World War II. Wounded in Italy, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He returned to Crookston and joined his father in the business then known as H. L. Carpenter and Sons which had been founded in 1880 by his grandfather, James E. Carpenter.
The business is now in the 97th year of existence and is operated as a C. J. Carpenter Agency, Incorporating insurance, real estate,farm management, and public accounting. Mr. Carpenter was a licensed treasury agent.
He was married to Ruth Dahlen, October 28, 1948 in Crookston, where they made their home. She died March 7, 1974.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, National Disable Officers Association, VFW, 40 & 8; and American Legion. He was a member of the Elks and served as auditor of Crookston Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 141 Pierson Chapter No. 41, Royal Arch Masons, Constantine Commandry No. 20, Shrine Kem Temple of Grand Forks, and the Crookston Shrine Band.
He was a member of the National Society of Public Accountants and State Associations of Public and Tax Accountants. He was a member of Riverview Hospital Association and a sustaining member of the Red River Valley Winter Shows, and was active in the DFL Party.
