Fred W. Bonness was born on May 23, 1922, in Long Branch, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was the son of Fred J. Bonness and Jean F. Bonness.

At the time of his death, Fred was serving in the Signal Corps as a Private and a passenger on the C-47 #43-48611. On January 18, 1945, he was killed in an air crash when they took off from A-54 airfield in Le Bourget, France, to be transported to Station 343 in Biggin Hill, England. Due to an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed approximately 7 minutes later after they took off. Eighteen people were killed in this accident, while four were seriously injured.
