Walter D. Domres was born on May 22, 1920, in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. He was the son of Frank John Domres and Katherine Deegan Wild. He was the husband of Miriam L. Morris Domres.

Walter served in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and a passenger on the C-47 #43-48611. On January 18, 1945, he survived the air crash when they took off from A-54 airfield in Le Bourget, France, to be transported to Station 343 in Biggin Hill, England. Due to an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed approximately 7 minutes later after they took off. Eighteen people were killed in this accident, while four were seriously injured.
